24-70mm f2.8 zooms are the workhorses of photo-journalists, portrait and wedding photographers, and almost every manufacturer has one in their portfolio. For owners of Nikon FX-bodies the two main choices are Nikon’s own AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED from 2007 and Tamron’s new SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD announced in 2012.

There are many fine 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses on the market, so the potential of Nikon's new Z system can perhaps be fairly judged by their new offering, the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is the lens for Nikon event shooters, but its not a perfect performer. Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VC VXD G2; Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS Sports;
The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism.
The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 weighs 805 grams (1.77 lbs), while the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 is a bit lighter at 630 grams (1.39 lbs). As for things like build quality and handling, the two lenses are surprisingly similar. Both have a lens function button, an extra control ring, and an A-M switch.
Unlike the f/4 S, the f/2.8 S does not have a shorter storage position you have to unclick the zoom from in order to start using it. The f/2.8 S is shortest at 24mm and ready to shoot. Zooming to 70mm lengthens the lens by a little over an inch. Focusing does not change the length (all focusing is internal).
The older Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G does a bit better at 35mm and 50mm focal lengths and at 70mm shows practically no CA. In comparison, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art is much better at all focal lengths with the exception of 70mm. The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 shows quite good CA performance, with the worst results at 35mm.

The NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 is the lightest, most nimble full-frame f/2.8 standard zoom we've ever created. It's nearly 30% lighter than the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S with a smaller diameter (75mm), and it's just 4.8 inches long when retracted. This is a go-to lens for being on-the-go.
